A Look at Dental Implant Placement

Dental implants are surgically placed to act as artificial tooth roots. Crowns, dentures, or bridges are then attached to the implant using a connector called an abutment. These dental restorations will be expertly customized to match the look of your natural teeth. Whether you are missing one tooth or every tooth, a dental implant consultation at Dr. Kirschner's practice in Plymouth, New Hampshire, is the first step to restoring your smile and oral health.

Dental Implants Offer Many Benefits

Dentistry professionals consider implants to be the best solution for missing teeth. Here's why:

Long-Term Solution

While dental restorations typically need to be replaced after roughly 15 years, implants themselves can last a lifetime in your jaw. They're most often made from titanium or zirconia, both incredibly durable materials meant for long-term use.

Improves Jawbone Health

Your jaw will begin to shrink and weaken when natural teeth are missing. This is because the tooth roots stimulate the jaw every time you bite down. Jaw atrophy can lead to serious dental issues, like misalignment and further tooth loss. Implants are the only solution that prevents jawbone atrophy.

Better Support for Dentures

Traditional full-arch dentures are held in place by dental adhesive, and are prone to fall out or slip. Dentures that Dr. Kirschner attaches to implants stay firmly in place, allowing you to eat and talk with confidence.

Improves Your Appearance

Besides the gaps in your smile, missing teeth can also give your cheeks a shriveled, aged look. Implants with attached restorations can fill out your face and smile, making you look younger and healthier.

Eat Your Favorite Foods

Missing teeth can make biting and chewing downright painful. Restorations attached to implants allow you to eat pretty much anything you want, including nuts, raw fruits, and crunchy vegetables.

Improved Speaking Ability

Your tongue needs teeth to pronounce words. Just one missing tooth can cause garbled speech. Implants can improve this dental issue and allow you to speak clearly and confidently again.

Dr. Kirschner prides herself on the compassion she has for her patients. Her caring nature and extensive experience provide a wonderful experience for patients of all ages. Our tight-knit team of hygienists and office staff creates a family-like atmosphere in the office that makes patients feel welcome. Having your teeth replaced with dental implants and restorations can be a big decision, both time-wise and financially. Our team is here to walk you through every step of this worthwhile journey.

How Insurance Handles Dental Implants

You should know that basic dental insurance plans do not cover dental implants and abutments (connector pieces). Your restorations, however, will be eligible for coverage. Our Plymouth practice accepts most types of dental insurance, and our dentist is a participating provider for Cigna®, Northeast Delta Dental®, and MetLife®. We will be happy to file a claim on your behalf and work with your provider to get you the most coverage possible.

Affordability Is Important

to Our Patients

You can take advantage of convenient financing through CareCredit® to make any out-of-pocket implant dentistry fees more affordable. We also offer discounts to seniors and to patients who are able to pre-pay for treatment. Dr. Kirschner wants to make the smile you desire a comfortable fit for your budget.

Depend On Us for Quality

Our restorations are not made in bulk or by a machine. Dr. Kirschner will send precise scans of your existing teeth, jaw, and oral structures to a trusted dental lab, where trained ceramists will hand-craft your crown, bridge, or denture per her detailed specifications. These days, many dentists use CEREC®, a tool for quickly producing same-day restorations. But in order to ensure the best results for you, our dentist has made a conscious decision not to.

Dr. Kirschner and our team firmly believe that a specialist's touch leads to far superior results for your appearance, comfort, and dental function.

Candidacy for Dental Implants And How Preparatory Dentistry Can Help

Elderly man holding jaw in pain

Not everyone is an immediate candidate for dental implants, but there are several treatment options that can get you ready for the placement procedure.

If your jawbone has weakened after tooth loss, a bone graft or sinus lift can replenish the lost tissue to recreate a stable base for the titanium implants. Dr. Kirschner can coordinate with a local oral and maxillofacial surgeon to provide these treatments.

If you're dealing with a problem like gum disease or decayed teeth that would stand in the way of your implant-supported restorations, our dentist can provide periodontal care or virtually painless extractions here at our Plymouth office.

How the Dental Implant Process Works

Though our dentist will not place your implants herself, she will be closely involved in every step of the process, from choosing a trusted oral surgeon to seeing you through your recovery and designing a restoration made just for you.
Though our dentist will not place your implants herself, she will be closely involved in every step of the process, from choosing a trusted oral surgeon to seeing you through your recovery and designing a restoration made just for you.

Consultation

First, you will have a thorough, state-of-the-art exam at Dr. Kirschner's Plymouth practice to determine if your jawbone is healthy enough to support dental implants. If you are a good candidate, you will be referred to a local oral surgeon for the implant placement procedure.

Implant Placement

During your implant surgery, local anesthesia will be administered to keep you comfortable. If the surgeon offers sedation, you can request it to keep your procedure stress-free and painless. Once you are comfortable, the surgeon will make small incisions in your gums. Then, he or she will place the titanium implants through the incisions and into the jawbone. Finally, the incisions are closed. Temporary restorations may be placed to maintain the aesthetics of your smile.

Osseointegration

After the dental implant surgery, a healing period of three to six months is required. During this time, osseointegration (the fusion of the bone and implant) will occur, firmly anchoring the implant in position.

Abutments

Once your dental implants are integrated with your bone, you will return to the oral surgeon for a minor surgical procedure to place abutments on the implants. Abutments connect restorations to implants. A healing period of about two weeks is usually required before the next, final step.

Restoration

When healing is complete, Dr. Kirschner can attach your permanent crown, bridge, or denture to your abutments. Your restoration will be crafted based on precise models of your bite, so it should fit precisely in your mouth. You will leave our Plymouth office ready to show off your new, complete smile.

Are Dental Implants Risky?

Like any surgical procedure, receiving dental implants involves some degree of risk. We coordinate with experienced, trusted surgeons to minimize any risk of complications. Possible adverse effects include:

  • Implant Failure: In rare cases, the post will fail to fuse with the surrounding bone tissue. You can minimize your risk for this complication by quitting smoking (if you do), controlling health issues like diabetes, and strictly following post-operative instructions.
  • Sinus Damage: Implants placed in the upper jaw can potentially damage the sinus cavities. A reputable surgeon will use 3D images to carefully plan your procedure. In some cases, they might recommend preparatory sinus lift surgery.
  • Infection: Your provider might prescribe antibiotics to reduce your risk of developing an infection. For others, keeping the area clean should be sufficient.
  • Nerve Damage: Similar to sinus issues, nerve damage can occur if the surgeon doesn't accurately plan the surgery or place the implant post. When facial nerves are compromised, issues like numbness and weakness can occur and be short-term or long-lasting.

FAQ About Dental Implants

How much are dental implants?

We're hesitant to provide even a price range to potential dental implant patients because treatment is highly customized. Until you come in for a personal estimate, know that the total cost of your care will largely be based on how many teeth you're missing, the type of material you choose for your restoration, and whether you require any preparatory care like a bone graft or treatment for periodontal disease.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants have incredible longevity. They can last for decades, or even the rest of your life. You'll need to follow instructions carefully to prolong their lifespan, which includes minimizing or quitting tobacco use, managing the effects of chronic diseases like diabetes, and visiting us regularly for professional cleanings and exams.

Do dental implants hurt?

Many dental implant patients are surprised at how little discomfort they feel during the procedure. Before your doctor begins, they will thoroughly numb the area with a local anesthetic. You might feel a slight sting at the time the shot or shots are administered. If you're still feeling anxious, you can discuss sedation options for varying degrees of relaxation.

I've heard I need to avoid dairy after dental implant surgery. Is that true?

Compared to other foods, some types of dairy products have the potential to harbor harmful bacteria. Depending on your health, whether you take antibiotics following surgery, and other factors, we might recommend you refrain from eating dairy for a certain period of time. You'll generally want to eat a bland (not spicy) diet full of soft foods like scrambled eggs, smoothies, and applesauce.
